I couldn’t believe those guys scheduled a Be Your Own Pet gig in such a tiny room. Razzmatazz is a local club with five different rooms, two of them quite big and three little ones. I thought they were famous enough over here to play in big venues but I guess they thought not many people would attend because of Black Lips concert at the Apolo and a popular university party taking place the same night. Anyway, they were not wrong at all because the place was not packed. The Tennessee foursome gave us what we expected, what we wanted. They were loud from the beginning to the end and, even though Jemina Pearl’s lyrics were not always clearly understandable, the show was great. You know, who cares about a little bit of distortion and shitty sound when all you want to do is jump and shout? The band was so receptive to the crowd’s demands, maybe too much. There were a bunch of skinheads who started being funny and ended up being terribly annoying. After the first song, Jemina said they were so glad to play their first gig in Spain or something like that. After that, the skinheads told her “Barcelona is not Spain,” and she was like “Oh ok, we are Americans. We don’t know about such things. Barcelona is not Spain!” It would have been funny if it had just finished there but those guys were insisting so much I think Jemina got pissed off. On the other hand, the bassist Nathan Vasquez, who is such a cool guy (not only because of his hairstyle), was the only one who actually seemed to have fun with the awkward skinheads. .
In spite of some technical problems and those rude guys, I think everybody there had fun. They are really young but just by controlling a few simple tricks they manage to deliver a consistent show. If you imagined they would be madly energetic on the stage after listening to their albums, you were right. And no, I was not drunk this time. - Grey
