Films: This Is England
Written and directed by Shane Meadows
Starring: Thomas Turgoose, Joseph Gilgun, Andrew Shim, Vicky McClure, Stephen Graham, Jo Hartley, Chanel Cresswell, Rosamund Hanson.

I've finally seen this movie about English skinheads’ movement in the early 80’s. It seems making documentary movies about music movements and urban subculture is quite trendy nowadays. Fortunately, it doesn’t mean we are pushed to watch tones of mediocre movies that were filmed just because it’s trendy. All of them are at least entertaining. “This Is England” is actually far from being a documentary. It focuses on the human side of the movement more than music or politics. The 12 year old kid who becomes a skinhead is a great actor and the whole story of desperation, manipulation and violence touches you. The social atmosphere is nothing new: working-class youngsters living in the suburbs under Thatcher’s rule. In fact, the Falklands issue appears on the movie (the father of the kid died in the war). I don’t know what skinheads will think about this movie but I highly recommend it. - Grey
