Al Green Lay It Down Blue Note Records May 27, 2008
Al Green is such a legend of modern music. I couldn't believe ¿uestlove from The Roots was producing his new album. It sounds like a great combination and the result is not bad. I guess nobody should expect him to make classics like he did back in the 60s and 70s and this album is certainly nothing spectacular. On the other hand, he will always be a gentleman. He will never lose his touch. Al Green is soul in capital letters. The production work done by The Roots' drummer is pretty good; a bunch of classic soul rhythms that work perfectly with Al Green's classic style. Although most of the tracks are just average songs (here average is not a pejorative word, because we are talking about classic stuff), a few of them are almost mind-blowing. The collaborations with Anthony Hamilton on "You've Got The Love I Need" and "Lay It Down" are brilliant. "Just For Me" is a wonderful love song, accompanied with a terrific blues guitar. "You've Got The Love I Need, Baby"… You already know what it is… - Grey
